Information from our inclusion policy
St Matthew’s C of E Primary School and Nursery values the individuality of all pupils; we are committed to giving pupils an equal opportunity to achieve the highest standard of education and have access to the full curriculum. We do this by taking account of pupils varied interests and needs. We intend to provide education that meets the specific needs of all individuals and groups of pupils, with the aim to eliminate discrimination. This policy helps to ensure that this school promotes the individuality of all our children, irrespective of ethnicity, attainment, age, disability, gender or background. The ultimate purpose of inclusion is to enable pupils to flourish in adult life. St Matthew’s C of E Primary School and Nursery aims to increase the level and quality of inclusion within school, while protecting and enhancing specialist provision for those who need it.
At St Matthew’s Primary School we look at the educational needs of a pupil with disabilities and, in liaison with all other professionals involved with the pupil, plan a comprehensive learning package, which will allow for measurable learning opportunities to be put in place. We will work closely with parents to ensure that their child receives the very best educational experience that St Matthew’s Primary School can offer.
At St Matthew’s Primary School we have an 'Equalities Policy', therefore every pupil is provided with equal opportunity to access all aspects of our curriculum.
St Matthew’s is a very wheelchair friendly school as the whole site is on one floor, with no steps to access the building. Playgrounds also have smooth, path access on both sides. The school has a changing bed, shower facility and standing frame in the disabled toilet. Other equipment such as hoists, wheelchairs and adapted chairs can be obtained from the physical difficulties teams. Moving and handling training is organised on a case by case basis and will vary depending on the needs of the child.
The Governing body is confident that pupils with additional educational needs at St Matthew’s Primary School will be provided with an educational support package designed to cater for their individual educational requirements. They are informed of any changes of policy which may affect the education of pupils with additional educational needs, and in what way the school will respond to those changes. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Miss Keates (EYFS and KS1 SENDCo), Mrs Woodward (KS2 SENDCo) or the SEN governor Mr Fenton.
We liaise closely with the nursery or school your child is transferring from or to. We are able to discuss with the relevant teachers any individual needs and how best to support your child in school. While at school we take care to ensure that during transition points (between classes each year and at the end of Key Stages) all staff are aware of individual pupils needs, learning progress and best support strategies. Staff receive pupil passports from previous class teachers and children will receive a transition book with photos of their new class to support them during the summer. School makes arrangements to ensure there is a smooth transition when your child transfers to his/her secondary school of choice. Please contact us for further details. If your child has an EHC Plan, we will participate and/or facilitate its review in sufficient time prior to him or her moving between key phases of education. You will be kept informed of these arrangements and asked to attend the reviews.
