Learning and Cognition

Learning needs

Teachers, HLTAs (higher level teaching assistants) and LSAs (Learning Support Assistants) have high expectations of pupils, and use their subject knowledge to enable all children to achieve the learning objective in lessons. Additional support or resources (such as numicon, visual instructions, word mats and task boards) are given to those who need them. Our school has iPads with Clicker, a computer based tool, which is used to help children access the curriculum. This ensures children begin to make progress independently.

At St Matthew’s we endeavour to close the gap between those with learning difficulties and their peers. To do this, extra teaching takes place to address misconceptions. If a child is on the SEN register for learning and cognition, they will have individualised targets. Staff members will then work with your child to help them reach these targets. Their progress will be reviewed regularly. Advice and support may be gained from external agencies for children with learning difficulties such as the Learning and Cognition Team of Specialist Teachers. If teachers feel a child may have dyslexia, we have an online dyslexia screener we use to detect this, though this does not give a formal diagnosis.

Currently we offer a variety of interventional programmes. Those currently available for children with learning and cognition needs are:
