First Aid and Medical

Children are sometimes involved in accidents at school. Most of the time, this is dealt with in school, by a member of the support staff.

Simple cuts and grazes are washed.  We do not use antiseptic creams or wipes, just clean water and a sterile dressing to clean wounds. We may give them an ice pack to hold over a wound to ease the discomfort. For most injuries this is sufficient.

If we feel the accident has been traumatic for the child or that the injury sustained needs more specialised treatment, we telephone for a parent or contact to come to school to assess the situation and to take the child home for more attention.

If the injury is more serious and needs urgent hospital attention, we telephone either parent or contact to come to the school immediately, if they are unavailable, we make arrangements for the child to be taken to hospital by ambulance and will meet the parent there. A senior member of staff or first aider will always accompany the child if the parent hasn’t arrived at the school. If necessary the member of staff will act in ‘loco parentis’ to ensure a child is treated appropriately at the hospital until a parent arrives.

Several members of staff have Paediatric First Aid qualifications, they are called upon to advise in the event of more serious injuries.

If a child falls ill whilst at school, we telephone the parent or contact (if the parents are unavailable) for the child to be taken home.

Record Keeping and Communication with Parents

The school uses Medical Tracker to keep a record of those children who have received first aid treatment for an injury or medical incident. In order to keep parents informed of any treatment that their child has received or an incident where there has been an injury, parents will receive an email generated by the software based on the information recorded by the school. For a head injury or a significant other injury, parents / carers will be required to acknowledge receipt of the email notification.

Medicine

We require parents to provide proof of a child's medical condition along with any necessary medication. This helps ensure that the school has the necessary information and resources to provide appropriate care for the child.

Additionally, we use Medical Tracker to track medication administration and expiration dates to ensure the safety and well-being of the pupils. Notifications about medication administration and expiration can help parents stay informed and proactive about their child's health needs while at school.

If you have any specific questions or concerns about medication administration or policies at your child's school, it's a good idea to reach out to the school office for clarification and guidance.

Intimate Care

As part of the admission process, parents will be provided with the opportunity to review and fill out an intimate care form. Granting consent to this form will enable staff to assist your child in changing themselves in the event of an accident.

School Nurse Visit

We work with the School Nurse team, who will visit the school if we feel there is a need, and can talk to students about a number of topics. In addition, the School Nursing Team conduct an visits to administer flu immunisations, ensuring that children are protected against seasonal influenza.

Important

Children who experience diarrhoea or vomiting must be kept at home and may return to school 48 hours after their last episode.
