Welcome to the Year 2 web page. In Year 2 we enjoy building our independence and using this to help us learn in a variety of ways. The teachers are Ms Iqbal and Mrs Chorlton. The teaching assistants are Mrs Akhtar, Miss Wachnuik and Mrs Wilford.
This term in English we are focusing on the text Where the Wild Things Are and are further developing our reading skills by predicting, answering questions and developing on the vocabulary used in the text. For writing we will be writing both Fiction and Non-Fiction texts including instructions.
In Maths we are focussing on counting, number bonds, times tables and place value knowledge. We are also learning to solve problems using addition and subtraction and different strategies we can use to help us. We enjoy maths as there are lots of ways to solve the problems and we can use the equipment around us in our classroom.
Our topics this half term are ‘Dinosaurs' and 'Living things and their habitats'. We will be learning about when and where the dinosaurs lived and about the different types of dinosaurs. We will learn about the characteristics of living things and how to categorise them. We will also learn about where animals live and why they live there.
To help your child at home you could practise counting in 1's, 2's 5's and 10's backwards and forwards starting at any number up to 100. Also practise timetables 2, 5 and 10.
When you are reading with your child please ask questions about what your child is reading and their opinions on the book as well as signing their reading jotters.
Examples of questions include:
- What is your favourite part of the story?
- Why do you like think a character did that?
- What might happen next?
- Can you find a word that means the same as……?
You could also ask your child their English and Maths targets and practise these skills with them.
Homework is given on a Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.
